Could anyone suggest a way to get a pretty lowercase 'l' with a loop? I
would like it for an equation.

I already looked through all one hundred pages of the comprehensive
symbol guide, but no luck.

Good call. Thanks Lars!

However, I seem to recall a version where the 'l' has no right cusp,
i.e. in which the bottom is nearly symmetrical (besides the slant). Do
you know what I'm talking about?

Comprehensive symbol list.

Look for "script" alphabets.
