Both teams are the 2-seed from their respective regions. Hickory, of the 3A West, last played in a state championship game in 1996. Seventy-First, of the 3A East, last made it in 2008. The squads from Catawba County and Cumberland County have crushed their opposition with offensive firepower all season. Their overall numbers are remarkably similar: Hickory averages 45.7 points/game, Seventy-First averages 43.7. Hickory averages 453.3 yards/game of total offense, Seventy-First averages 453.0.
While the overall numbers look similar, these teams have arrived at that production in different ways.
Hickory junior quarterback Brady Stober has effectively slung the ball around the yard all fall. Stober has completed 220 of 313 passing attempts (70.3%) for 3,695 yards and 47 touchdowns to just four interceptions. That touchdown-to-interception ratio is one of the best in North Carolina.
