I kan make double-arrows with \leftrightarrow and \updownarrow, and I
can make diagonal arrows with \nearrow and \nwarrow etc., but how can I
make diagonal double-arrows?

The Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List (available from CTAN) shows how to
define \neswarrow and \nwsearrow macros in the section "Where can I find
the symbol for ... ?".
